Nacton v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 48 runs
Match report
Halstead II - 217-6 - lost to Nacton - 265-5 - by 48 runs
An early dropped catch proved vital as Halstead lost by 48 runs to Nacton, despite half centuries from Mark Johnson and Andy Clark.
A simple chance at cover was dropped first ball of the game, giving Billy Hamnett (55) a vital reprieve that would prove to be costly for Halstead.
The opener made the most of his chance as he and Jonathan Warner (33) put on 93 runs for the opening Nacton wicket, both openers riding their luck at times.
Rob Harris (1-60) making his first HCC appearance of the season eventually got Halstead on the board, Hamnett playing onto his own stumps shortly after bringing up his 50.
Mark Johnson (1-29) then dismissed Warner first ball of the next over, the Nacton skipper edging onto his own stumps as they lost two wickets without score.
Matt Parker (38) and Ben Glading (47) built an 82-tun partnership for the third wicket, despite the latter surviving strong LBW appeals when hit on the full by Harris.
Callum Hansey (2-73) eventually dismissed both batsmen, Glading caught at short cover by Johnson and Parker bowled, but the Halstead bowler suffered most of the onslaught in the latter overs to compound the misery of the earlier drop.
Jack Coomber (53) and Corey Stockwell (28*) taking the score over 200 as Halstead struggled to retain control in the latter stages, Simon Steel (1-12) bowling Coomber with the final ball just after the Nacton all-rounder reached his half-century.
Halstead got their reply off to an inauspicious start as Simon Steel (2) and Charles Mallett (6) were both out with the scores below 20 - Steel caught by Oliver Butcher off Stockwell (1-21) and Mallett bowled by Marc Robinson (2-51) - as Halstead slipped to 18-2.
Paul Cutmore (3) was bowled by slow left-armer Coomber (2-55), but Andy Clark (72) and Mark Johnson (87*) recovered from 42-3 to put Halstead back in contention.
Clark hit 8 fours and 3 sixes in his innings, taking the game to the Nacton attack, finding gaps despite a heavy leg-side field from the home side, the Halstead wicketkeeper passing 50 for the second time this season during the 93-run stand.
Dave Brooker (6) swept Coomber for four first ball but feathered an edge behind to Warner off John Bafico (1-13), with Johnson passing his half-century in the next over.
David Baalham (15) hit three fours as Halstead just about kept themselves in contention, but the required rate reached more than two-a-ball when Baalham was caught at mid-on by Butcher off Robinson.
Andy Rose (10*) hit a four and a six, but he and Johnson were left unbeaten as Halstead finished 48 runs short are were left to rue the missed chance early on. Johnson hit 13 fours in his 102-ball innings, finishing on 87, 113 runs short of what would have been an excellent century.
