Match report The 2026 season for Halstead Cricket Club got under way on Saturday under sunny skies.
The defending Champions in Division 1 , the 1st XI , entertained Clacton at Star Stile and having lost the toss were put in to bat first on a typically green pitch for the time of year . Batting proved challenging with the home team slipping to 85/4 with the visitors young South African left arm fast bowler Jakobus van der Valt taking three wickets . Enter the ever reliable Josh Wells who completely changed the course of the innings with a superb 141.Watchful to begin , once he passed 100 he moved through the gears smashing the Clacton bowlers to all parts of the ground . He was ably assisted by Josh King , Joe Morris and finally by Lewis Millions . Better known for his bowling he blazed 45 runs from just 21 balls leaving Halstead on 306/8 off their 50 overs .
Facing such a huge target Clacton got off to a bright start putting on 80 before 3 wickets fell for just one run . Opening batsman Tom Sinclair proved stubborn falling five short of his century but the Halstead bowlers kept chipping away ensuring Clacton never really looked like challenging , finally falling 57 runs short. The wickets were shared with Josh Wells taking 3 , Josh King and Callum O’Connell 2 apiece a singles for Sam Walter and Lewis Millions.
Next week Halstead travel to Mistley who will be looking to bounce back from an opening day defeat to Hadleigh.
