Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Mildenhall III on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
Halstead Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Halstead II - 180-5 - lost to Mildenhall III - 181-7 - by 3 wickets
The First Eleven were not the only Halstead side to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday as the Second Eleven fell to a 3-wicket defeat to Mildenhall III.
Halstead lost the toss and were put in to bat, Andy (20) and Justin Rose (17) putting on 45 for the first wicket, either side of a rain delay.
Justin was the first wicket to fall, hitting a straightforward chance to mid off which was dropped, but confusion reigned and both Roses were found at the non-strikers' end meaning Justin was run out for 17.
Andy Rose followed soon after when hitting Martin Taylor (1-37) straight to Mildenhall skipper Kiefer Renouf at cover.
Andy Clark (18) was watchful at first but then pushed on, hitting a four and a six in his 26-ball stay at the crease, but was stumped by Connor Cobbold in Mo Ubaid's (2-37) first over.
Matt Cooper (31) and Chris Amos (46*) rebuilt in a. patient 46-run stand for the fourth wicket, the pair running well between the wickets as boundaries were hard to come by on a turning pitch.
Cooper became Renouf's second victim in the field, this time off Ubaid and Luke Robinson (10) was run out by an excellent throw front he boundary by Raeel Afaal, leaving Amos and Dave Brooker (14*) to see Halstead through to 180-5 from their 40 overs.
Mildenhall's innings got off the a terrible start as Neil Clark (0) hit Justin Rose (2-50) to Chris Roper at gully in the first over, with Mark Thurston (1) following in the third over, caught at square leg by Brooker off the same bowler.
It could have been so much worse for the visitors as James Taylor (49) should have been caught off Robinson (3-47) to reduce Mildenhall to 4-3, but the chance was spilt.
Robinson would take his first wicket when Raeel Afaal (6) was caught behind by Clark, though Taylor and Matthew Heywood (53) moved the scores to 65-4 before the introduction of Callum Hansey (1-30) paid immediate dividends as Taylor was caught behind by Clark.
The misery should have been compounded for Mildenhall as Heywood was dropped the next over off Roper (0-35) at square leg whilst on just 5, but made the most of his reprieve.
Heywood and Harry Parker (16) approached three figures for the visitors, but a poor call left Parker well short when Matt Cooper hit the stumps to run him out.
The mistakes continued for the hosts as yet another dropped catch let Martin Taylor off early in his innings, putting on 51 with Heywood as Halstead allowed Mildenhall back into the game.
Robinson returned to the attack to dismiss both Heywood and Taylor - the former bowled and the latter caught by Chris Roper at deep midwicket - in the same over as the game swung back in Halstead's favour.
However, it would prove to be too little too late as Mildenhall captain Renouf (24*) and Cobbold (4*) saw the visitors home with four balls to spare.
Three dropped catches that combined cost over 100 runs proved to pivotal as Halstead were yet again left ruing simple mistakes as their losing streak extends to seven games.
