Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Worlington II on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 12:30
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 31 runs
Match report
Halstead II - 227-4 - beat Worlington II - 196 all out - by 31 runs
The Second XI made it back-to-back wins for the first time since May as they ran out 31 runs victors over their Worlington counterparts on Saturday.
Half-centuries from Justin Rose (73), Charles Mallett (54*) and Andy Clark (50) set-up a total of 227-4 for the hosts, whilst Chris Roper (4-69) and Justin Rose (3-39) ensured the visitors would not reach their target.
Skipper Andy Rose (0) won the toss, but was dismissed second ball of the game, caught by Alfie Young off Lachlan Howard (1-24).
Justin Rose (73) and Andy Clark (50) added a patient 115 for the second wicket, accumulating well early on as Rose dominated the scoring - bringing up his half-century with one of 11 fours - as he and Clark punished some lax Worlington bowling.
Clark upped his scoring rate, reaching 36 when Rose was finally dismissed, caught by Thomas Baugh off Daren Hayward (1-55).
Clark and Chris Amos (39) put on 46 for the third wicket, the Halstead keeper-batsman hitting 5 fours and a six on his way to a 96-ball 50, though he fell soon after completing the milestone - his fourth of the season - caught by Hayward off Matt Peachey (1-27).
Charles Mallett (54*) continued his fine form from the week before, scoring quickly as he took the game to Worlington, with Amos rotating the strike well to let the Halstead youngster take control.
Amos only hit two boundaries, but scored at near a run-a-ball for his 39, but was bowled by Craig Woollard (1-53) attempting to guide one to third man.
Mallett brought up his half-century - a first league 50 for the club - in fine style with a six over mid-wicket, finishing on 54 from just 38 balls.
Halstead made immediate inroads to the Worlington order as Justin Rose (3-39) struck early, trapping both Thomas Baugh (4) and Barnaby Bowens (0) lbw in successive balls.
Daren Hayward (54) survived the hattrick ball and built frustrating partnerships with Alfie Young (18) and Lachlan Howard (8) as Worlington kept in touch with the chase, though the required rate remained just above a run-a-ball.
The introduction of left-arm spinner Chris Roper (4-69) accounted for Young, caught by Justin Rose at slip, whilst Callum Hansey (1-50) set the trap for Howard to be caught at deep mid-wicket by Adam Morris.
When Hayward departed – caught by Mallett in the deep off Roper – shortly after reaching his 50, Worlington were 91-5.
Colin Thompson (28) and skipper Matt Peachey (54) proceeded to build an 86-run partnership to get the visitors back in the game, though the pair rode their luck as they were dropped three times between them off Hansey’s bowling.
As things started to look ominous for Halstead a double strike from Roper all but put the game to bed. Morgan Whymark took a good catch in the deep to dismiss Thompson, whilst two balls later Peachey advanced past the ball to be stumped by Clark.
Craig Woollard (0 was bowled by Rose without scoring, leaving Frank Stennett (4*) and Paul Marston (13) to small cameos, the latter the last man out, bowled by Luke Robinson (1-29) as the final Worlington man was absent injured.
